After its huge success in Broadway, “Come From Away” arrives at the Phoenix Theatre on 30 January, 2019. Not only will this new musical make you laugh and cry and move you, for many people it will also be a burst of hope that will help you recover your faith in humanity. Written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, and directed by Christopher Ashley, Come From Away is a true story of kindness, unconditional love and union in the face of an unfortunate situation. In short, if you like to leave the theatre with a smile on your face, then this is the musical for you.
Based on a true story, Come From Away narrates one of the untold stories of September 11, 2001. A musical about the other side of the tragedy, which not only abounded in hatred and terror, but also in love, affection, empathy and bonding. All the characters are based on real people who were specifically interviewed by the creators of the musical.
Running time: 100 minutes with no intermission
Recommended age: over 10 years old.
After the 9/11 terror attacks, 7,000 passengers who were on their way to the United States were diverted to the little town of Gander in Newfoundland, Canada, making its population of no more than 9,000 multiply by two to some 16,000 people. The musical tells the story of how all these neighbours, who were totally unprepared to attend to so many people without any prior warning, did everything they could to provide shelter for all the passengers at a time of such tension as was experienced on that fateful September day.
A moving story that shows how feelings of love and compassion are stronger than fear or terror. In a time when smartphones had yet to be invented, all those people who had “Come From Away” to Gander had no way of getting in touch with their relatives or to find out what was really going on nor when they might be able to return to the United States. Thanks to the hospitality of this Canadian community, who did everything they possibly could to help, every single one of them received shelter, irrespective of their culture, religion or mother language.
