Awarded the 2020 Olivier Award for Best New Play, Tom Stoppard’s Leopolstadt has been met with immense critical acclaim after showing at the West End for a limited few weeks before the Covid-19 crisis. Following much eager anticipation, Leopoldstadt is returning to the West End in 2021!
Inspired by his own Jewish heritage, Tom Stoppard’s sensational new play, which is perhaps his last, has been described as contemplative and heartbreaking; it is an exploration of Jewish identity across several generations. Directed by Patrick Marbes, Leopolstadt has been extensively hailed as a masterpiece.
Leopolstadt was known as the old, bustling quarter of Vienna in the 20th century, yet Herman Mertz, a manufacturer and baptised Jew married to Catholic Gretl, had greatly elevated himself in the world. Leopolstadt follows the intricacies of prosperous Mertz and his family during the first half of the twentieth century, right up until the Nazis invade Austria and Jewish life is set to change dramatically…

The children’s cast, comprising three sets of five children, includes Toby Cohen, Zachary Cohen, Olivia Festinger, Tamar Laniado, Maya Larholm, Daniel Lawson, Louis Levy, Libby Lewis, Jack Meredith, Chloe Raphael, Beatrice Rapstone and Montague Rapstone.
Leopolstadt follows the lives of the prosperous Herman Merz’ Jewish family in the first half of the 20th century in the busy quarter, Leopoldstadt, in Vienna. However, when the Nazis invade Austria, their lives change forever…
Leopolstadt was written by the highly regarded and award-winning playwright Tom Stoppard.
