Considered pioneers of the reggae scene, the legendary Toots and the Maytals are one of the best known ska and rocksteady vocal groups in the world. The Toots and the Maytals were significant in transporting reggae beyond Jamaica.
Originally hailing from Jamaica, the Toots and the Maytals were originally called the Maytals, and later became the Toots and the Maytals with frontman Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, who grew up singing gospel in a church choir.
Having achieved a multitude of top hits, the Toots and the Maytals are known for smash hit numbers such as ‘Pressure Drop’, ‘Monkey Man’ and ‘54-46 Was My Number’, as well as enjoying covers from world-class artists such as The Clash, The Specials and Amy Winehouse. Their smash-hit 1968 single, ‘Do the Reggae’ was the first use of the word ‘reggae’ which led to the term becoming popularised.
From May 2020, the Toots and the Maytals are embarking on a Farewell UK Tour, which is followed by a festival slot at Dun Laoghaire’s All Aboard.
